Maca
Lepidium Meyenii
Maca is a plant with a taproot that is cultivated as a food and for its therapeutic properties since the Neolithic in the High Andes of Peru from 3500 to 4,200 meters (remnants of maca have been identified in a prehistoric cave and its culture was confirmed by several chronics during the Spanish conquest).
Maca is one of very few plants that can survive in extreme climatic conditions found in the highlands of the Andes. In Peru, the tuber is eaten raw, cooked or dried for the preparation of cookies, cakes, chips and drinks.
the nutritional value of dried maca root is high, similar to cereal grains such as rice and wheat. In addition to the carbohydrates and proteins, maca contains uridine, malic acid and a large number of different amide called macamides, it also contains selenium and magnesium, and polysaccharides.
since the late 90s maca marketing has known a great expansion, it is exported all around the world for its alleged aphrodisiac virtues, stimulating libido and male and female fertility. Its medicinal potential is being studied to identify the active molecules. The three main ecotypes appear to have slightly different effects on men and women, but always beneficial for fertility.
